How Often Do I Need Dental X-Rays?
Dental X-rays allow your dentist to evaluate the health of your teeth and jaw, as well as detect any changes in the positioning of your teeth or bite. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that adults with an increased risk of cavities get X-rays every six months to a year. For those with minimal risk of decay, such as those who have never had a cavity, the ADA advises they may be able to wait as long as two to three years.
How often you get routine dental X-rays will ultimately come down to what your dentist believes is best, since they know your dental history and should know if any concerns arise. If you’re told you can go more than a year without X-rays, this is probably because you have great dental health, and if you were to get a cavity, it would likely progress at a very slow rate, making it possible for your dentist to detect it in your tooth’s outermost layers. While you may be able to go a year or longer without getting X-rays, keep in mind that you should still schedule routine dental cleanings and exams every six months. In addition to removing tartar, this visit makes it possible for your dentist to identify any areas of decay or other problems that may warrant treatment.
At Austin Dental Spa, we utilize the advanced Planmeca ProMax® 3D Mid Cone Beam CT to perform in-depth imaging scans of your mouth. This innovative CBCT technology captures 3D photos of the patient’s oral structures, and offers 10 times more information than traditional X-rays. We’re especially proud to utilize this system because it’s not only more efficient, but it doesn’t require any bitewings, making it significantly more comfortable for patients.
